KREAS, where does that name come from?

The word “kreas” comes from the Greek κρέας, which means meat understood as food. Likewise, “kreas” was also the first name given in 1832 to the protein we now know as creatine, which is essential for maintaining muscle health and ensuring optimal athletic performance. Lastly, the word “kreas” shares the same root as creation.

Metaphorically playing with the word “kreas” and in line with the three aspects mentioned, we are a center for knowledge creation and transfer, shaped and directed towards the food sector.

The headquarters of KREAS is located in Olot, the capital of the Garrotxa region, and serves the entire country. This is a predominantly industrial area, with a well-established network of small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as large leading companies, mostly with local capital, where the most important industrial sector is agri-food, both in terms of production and the number of workers.

This business network requires properly trained professionals as well as technological and scientific excellence, and this is the demand that companies across the entire food chain, especially the processing industry, have conveyed to the entities participating in the KREAS project: to attract and train talent, promote applied research projects and foster knowledge transfer and valorization.

The KREAS Foundation is a non-profit organization that is born from the hand of the Business Federation of Meat and Industries Càrnies (FECIC) that brings together more than 96% of Catalan meat production, and the Balmes University Foundation (FUB), an entity owned by the University of Vic-Central University of Catalonia, with a clear positioning of service in the territory and in its companies. The Foundation also has the complicity since its inception of the Olot City Council that opted for a successful project in the business and educational environment that has a direct impact on the economic and social fabric.

The Board of Trustees of the KREAS Foundation is the governing, representative and administrative body of the Foundation. And it is made up of different participating and collaborating entities. The Executive Committee has the statutory delegated powers, as well as the monitoring of compliance and execution of the Board’s agreements and is made up of 7 members. The General Management is the figure that holds the executive management of the entity with the support of a technical, teaching and administrative team.

The mission of KREAS is to generate and attract talent through an offer of quality professional training relevant to the agri-food industry, which allows to make companies in the sector more competitive and to promote research, innovation and knowledge transfer and valorization as an engine for improvement.

KREAS’s vision is to maintain the high quality standards achieved as a benchmark for Integrated Vocational Training and to become and consolidate itself as a centre for innovation and research in the agri-food and health sector.

KREAS’s quality policy includes this mission and specifies it in the following values:

  • Willing to achieve high levels of satisfaction of the students of our training actions and the companies with which we collaborate.
