R&D&I

At Kreas we firmly believe in research, innovation and knowledge transfer as the backbone of a more sustainable, fairer, more equitable and healthier food system.

A challenge ahead

The food industry is facing an unprecedented global challenge: securing food supplies for a world population that is expected to increase significantly over the next few decades. It is projected that by 2050, 60% more food will have to be produced to meet demand. To achieve this milestone, it is essential to focus the future of the food business on sustainability. And for this transformation to be effective, it is essential to incorporate the vision of a sustainable, fair, equitable and healthy food system focused on the circular bioeconomy that seeks, on the one hand, to maximize efficiency in the use of natural resources, and on the other, to eliminate the concept of rejection through the maximum use, reuse and revaluation of these resources.

Knowledge of the sector

Thanks to its close relationship with the food industry, the Kreas Foundation detects first-hand opportunities for improvement in the optimization of processes and the application of sustainability measures. This proximity allows it to provide practical solutions adapted to the real needs of the sector.

Links with established R&D&I centres

The Kreas Foundation is under the umbrella of the Uvic-UCC, which allows it to establish direct contact with different consolidated research groups with whom it can create collaborative synergies. In addition, it has strategic alliances with international reference centres, promoting innovation and knowledge in the agri-food sector.

Attracting and developing talent

The Kreas Foundation is a hub for attracting, generating and developing talent linked to the food industry. This commitment is reinforced by the incorporation of highly qualified professionals, focused on research, development and innovation, ensuring an ecosystem of knowledge and continuous growth.

Territorial revitalization

La Garrotxa stands out for its balance between economic development and environmental sustainability, making it a strategic location for research into food sustainability. The presence of Kreas contributes to this revitalization, connecting the territory with innovation and progress in the sector.

Food waste in the food industry

FAO* data show that currently between a quarter and a third of the food produced annually for human consumption is lost or wasted. This, in addition to representing economic losses for organizations in the sector, contributes 10% to the generation of greenhouse gases.

The projects promoted by the R&D&I center have a significant territorial impact and are aligned with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
